Tough Love Garden Supply

From my childhood love of the great outdoors, embarking on adventurous walks and exploring new destinations during family vacations, to lending a hand to injured animals found along the roadside or elsewhere while growing up, my affinity for nature has always burned brightly. Little did I know that a chance encounter with a hairy blue cactus amidst a pile of discarded items during a camping trip at my uncle's place in August 2021 would ignite a thrilling new chapter in my life, shared with my partner.

The spark of passion gradually ignited when we relocated to Murray Bridge together. I found myself traversing from one shop to another, eagerly collecting every variety of cactus within my reach. Soon, after a few friendly requests to locals for cuttings of the cacti adorning their front or backyards, I realized there was scarce appreciation for these peculiar yet remarkable plants. To my delight, many were more than willing to part with their cacti either for free or even offering payment. And so, the journey truly began.

Here I stand at 20 years old, wielding shears against towering cacti, some four times my height and age, cramming them into my trusty Toyota Corolla or a friend's ute, ferrying multiple loads to my once-spacious four-bedroom rental, now bursting at the seams with prickly treasures. Eventually, a triple-car garage became the sanctuary for about three tons of cacti before space became a pressing issue. After selling, donating, and trading a good percentage of my collection (including three substantial stumps gifted to the Arizona Cactus Ranch), I reinvested the proceeds into acquiring more cacti, fueled by an ever-growing passion and addiction to these plants and the natural world they epitomize.

Fast forward almost three years to March 2024, and at 22 years old, I find myself nurturing cacti from seed, with a staggering 250 different species thriving in takeaway tubs—approximately 100 of each species. My sights are set on developing breeding programs for endangered varieties like the golden barrel, alongside educating others on the myriad uses and benefits of cacti. I'm now sourcing them by the truckload or vanload to stock my soon-to-be-opened retail shop, offering an array of cacti, succulents, landscape plants, and gardening equipment.

Furthermore, I'm diligently working towards acquiring my first parcel of land to expand my collection. In the years ahead, I envision creating an expansive garden where the public can marvel at the beauty of my spiky companions. But that's just the beginning of my journey.
